Daytona 500 Recap

The 2019 Daytona 500 is in the books and I'm here with a recap for the first speed week of the 2019 racing season.  Jimmy Johnson won the first event as he won the Advanced Auto Parts Clash.  Kevin Harvick took the first Cam Am Duel and Joey Logano took the second Cam Am Duel.  Austin Hill won the Nextera Energy Resources 250.  Michael Annett won the Powershares 300.

In lap 11 of the Daytona 500 Gibbs racing paid tribute to JD Gibbs who passed away during the winter.  Lap 21 saw the first caution of the day as LaJoie had tire problems and problems on his front fender.  McDowell had the first pit road penalty on lap 23 as he went too fast headed into pit road.  On lap 31 it appeared that Elliot was having radio issues.  49 saw the second caution as there was a wreck involving Wallace, Kurt Busch, and McMurray.  Austin Dillon spun out to avoid the wreck.  Kyle Busch would go on to win the first stage of the three stage race.

During the reset Jamie McMurray had a penalty for too many crew members on pit road, Bubba Wallace had a penalty for too many members on pit road as well.

Lap 66 would start stage 2.

On lap 74 David Ragan and Paul Menard were penalized for going too fast onto pit road.  On lap 84 Kurt Busch was black flagged for not serving a pit road penalty for having too many members over the wall  On lap 86 Corey LaJoie and Cody Ware were penalized for speeding on pit road.  On lap 106 the third caution of the day was waved as Casey Mears and Parker Kligerman wrecked on turn 1. On lap 110 Bowman had a penalty for too many crew members over the wall on pit road.  Ryan Blaney would win stage 2.

During the reset Ryan Newman was penalized for having an uncontrolled tire.

Lap 125 started the final stage of the race.

On lap 156 Austin Dillon ran into the back of Gaughan coming out of pit road.  On lap 159 BJ McClowd, Ware, Johnson, Stenhouse, and Reddick were involved in a crash at the start of pit road.  On lap 161 Jimmie Johnson had tire damage.  On lap 165 Martin Truex JR was penalized for speeding down pit road.  On lap 165 Austin Dillon was penalized for having too many members over the pit wall.  On lap 174 there was a caution flag out for debris.  On lap 181 Larson would slam into the wall and would spin out as he lost a tire.  On lap 187 Brad Keselowski spun out and lost control after losing his left rear tire.  That would lead to another caution,  On lap 192 Paul Menard, Matt Dibenedetto, Martin Truex JR, Alec Almrola, Daniel Surez, David Ragan, Tyler Reddick, Ryan Blaney, Matt Tifft, Austin Dillon, Jimmie Johnson, Erik Jones, Daniel Hemric, Chris Buescher, Rickey Stenhouse, Ryan Preece, William Byron, Joey Logano, Kyle Larson, and Chase Elliot were involved in a wreck on turn 3.  On lap 194 Stenhouse, Elliot, and Bowman were involved in another wreck.  On lap 196 Alex Bowman, Kevin Harvick, Chase Elliot, Brad Keselowski, Ricky Stenhouse, Ty Dillon, and Kyle Larson were involved in a wreck.  On lap 199 McDowell turned into Bowyer.  Byron, Elliot, and Cassill were involved.  The 11 car Denny Hamlin would win the 2 lap over time to win the Daytona 500.  Kyle Busch who has yet to win a Daytona 500 would take second.  What a story book ending for the 11 car to win the Daytona 500 for JD Gibbs and Joe Gibbs racing.  Busch is also part of Joe Gibbs racing.
